4 Fun Roommate Dates to Plan for the Spring Semester

By Tamiera Vandegrift on January 12, 2018

The end of winter break is approaching fast and you’ll be reunited with your roommate very soon! It’s time to figure out your plans for the next semester. While stocking up on notebooks and planners is a good way to start, take a moment to think of something a little lighter. Your roommate is sometimes your closest companion in this crazy ride of a college career. They’re the person you come home to, watch Netflix with, and (sometimes) burn meals in front of.

Your roommate is your main squeeze so be sure to plan some fun activities for the two of you in the spring. You both have worked hard last semester and you deserve to take some time to treat yourselves in the spring. Keep reading for some ways to do so. Here are a handful of fun roommate dates to plan for the spring!

Weekend Excursion

If either of you have a car, you have a wider range of possibility for adventure. Reach out to your roommate before you both head back to campus and talk to them about planning a small road trip to another town or city. Do research about local places you haven’t seen and agree on a place to visit. A change of scenery can be wonderful and therapeutic sometimes – especially when the semester gets tough. Once you both have a free weekend, pack your things and hit the road for a small adventure.

Use this time to try new things and jump outside of your comfort zone to have new experiences. Stop by that local food truck. Grab a souvenir from that hole-in-the-wall gift shop. Walk through that tiny park. By broadening your horizons and escaping from campus every so often, your roommate and you will have a chance to develop your friendship and yourselves. Carpe diem, friends.

Venture Further

Fun roommate date ideas can be found everywhere – even your own backyard. Have a great time with your roommate by trying something that neither of you have done before. Do the both of you need to find an elective? Enroll in a unique class together, like Introduction to Beekeeping or Surviving the Apocalypse: 101. (Yes, those are real classes!) Take lessons in something you’d normally never try, like belly dancing or knitting. Try something new and crazy, like kayaking or hiking – if you’re on the more edgy side of the spectrum. If your roommate and you are a little bit more tame, try getting a fun haircut together or going to a local concert for a band you’ve never heard of.

Sometimes, the best way to spend time and bond with people is to throw yourselves into something you’ve never experienced. With the spring semester coming up soon, there is no better time to start planning all of the fun, crazy things you both will try. It will be something that you can both look back fondly upon long after you cross the graduation stage.

Movie Nights

Being a college student, you have access to all types of streaming services for a discounted (sometimes, free!) rate. For instance, you can get both Spotify Premium and Hulu for $5.99 per month! Some universities offer free HBO too. The point here is that you and your roommate have access to a plethora of movies and TV shows right at your fingertips.

Set aside a few Friday nights to kick back in your living room with some snacks and a night of movies. To spice things up a little, check with your university’s library and see if they have projectors for checkout. If they do, you’ll have the ability to set up your own little theater right in the comfort of your apartment or dorm. You’ll save tons of money from watching movies at home instead of your local movie theater and nothing beats enjoying a movie in the coziest environment possible.

Grub Getaway

Let’s face it. Dining hall food gets old. After a while, the same oven-baked pizzas and stir-fry specials will grow stale and you’ll be craving something a little different. Believe me. You’re not alone. Without a doubt, your roommate will be dealing with the same struggle. So, what’s the solution? College towns are full of little unique eateries waiting to be discovered. Some offer discounts and special deals for college students. When your roommate and you are sick of dining hall food and don’t feel like cooking, take some of your free time to hit the road and see what’s good in town. In my own college town, I’ve found a French bistro, a gourmet vegan joint, and a pizza parlor famous for its larger-than-life pizzas. What will you find?

With the spring semester right around the corner, it’s time to start gearing up for your classes, but it’s also time to plan ways to enjoy your time in school. These years will go by fast so make sure that both your roommate and you savor every moment while you can. Carpe the heck out of this Diem.
